Connect your sound card to a USB hub with an external power supply.

The long story

A few months ago I changed my computer. The new one is high-end: it has a Ryzen 9 7950X processor and an Nvidia RTX 3080 GPU. Finding a motherboard was not easy: all the models compatible with that processor have a lot of compromises (or prohibitive costs). Eventually, I took an ASRock B650 PG Lightning with its pros and cons.

Everything is powered by a BitFenix Whisper 850W PSU, which has good reviews on many specialized sites.

The system is very stable with Linux: it can sustain several Firefox builds consecutively for hours without batting an eye.

Sadly, I cannot say the same for Windows, which I use almost exclusively for playing games. I often had blue screens of death with the DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION error.

When I analyzed the dumps with WinDBG, I noticed the Komplete Audio 6 driver was always in the stack trace when this happened.

I tried to contact Native Instruments for help, but they were super unhelpful. I even asked them to make the driver open source since it is an old product they do not care about anymore. … [Leggi il resto]

Da allora, la uso come scheda audio principale, anche se ormai non faccio quasi più niente che abbia bisogno di una bassa latenza. Almeno sfrutto l’alimentazione phantom per il microfono per fare le conferenze online 😂.

Spesso succede che all’accensione del computer la scheda non sia disponibile. Il led USB lampeggia, cioè la periferica riceve alimentazione, ma la negoziazione con l’host per qualche motivo è fallita. Mi succede sia su Linux, che su Windows, dove ho i driver ufficiali di NI.

È un problema un po’ fastidioso, ma anche facile da risolvere: basta staccare il cavo USB e riattaccarlo.

Lunedì mi è successo per l’ennesima volta, e sarebbe potuta essere l’ultima: reinserendo il cavo USB, si è rotta la porta USB B dell’interfaccia. Il pezzo in plastica ha perso la sua stabilità e veniva spinto indietro ogni volta che connettevo il cavo.

Fortunatamente, ho uno stagnatore e un po’ di attrezzi utili per lavori di elettronica. Quindi, pur non avendo mai lavorato su schede con componenti a montaggio superficiale, ho deciso di tentare la sorte e provare a cambiare la porta rotta. Ten years ago, or so, I bought my first external hard drive. At a certain point, one of my cats dropped it. So I switched to a networked RAID 1 with a modified GoflexNet at the beginning of 2016.

That escalated more when, in 2018, I built a PC to replace it. The GoflexNet was quite good, but its CPU was a bottleneck for file transfers. Also, I was a bit worried about the quality of the power supply: I used a cheap LED transformer for over two years 😅️.

I bought a Celeron G3930, the less powerful but also the cheapest processor of the Kaby Lake microarchitecture. I wanted a recent (for the time) CPU because of the improved power efficiency. It is not as good as ARM, but it is acceptable to me. I paired it with an MSI B250 Pro-VD motherboard and 4GB of 2133MHz memory.

The most expensive part was the power supply: a Seasonic SSR-360GP, the littlest member of the G series. It cost more than twice the price of the CPU. But it has good reviews on many sites.

Lunedì Apple ha annunciato un Macbook dotato di processore ARM, anziché di un processore Intel x86, la piattaforma da loro usata negli ultimi quasi 15 anni.

Già da qualche tempo gli appassionati si aspettavano che sarebbe successo, e non sono rimasti troppo stupiti dalla notizia, però ogni decisione di Apple fa discutere molto anche chi non normalmente non si interessa di questo settore.

Il risultato è che a volte ci sono commenti, o addirittura articoli di siti più o meno specializzati imprecisi, se non fuorvianti. Altre volte invece sono gli hater di Apple a cambiare significato alle notizie. Ho deciso quindi di fare un paio di commenti anche io.

I propri processori/silicio

Apple progetta da diversi anni i processori dei suoi telefoni e tablet, ma non direi che “propri” sia la parola corretta.

Apple compra la proprietà intellettuale da ARM Holdings, una società che appunto vende proprietà intellettuale a chi è interessato. Hanno davvero tante linee: dai processori più economici da meno di 1€ per l’embedded (e.g. per i controller delle stampanti 3D), a CPU per supercomputer, passando praticamente per tutti gli smartphone e tablet. … [Leggi il resto]

Da alcuni mesi ho un bug decisamente antipatico con il WiFi nel mio portatile ASUS N550, dotato di una Qualcomm Atheros AR9485.

La scheda ha sempre funzionato abbastanza bene, viene gestita dal leggendario driver ath9k, uno dei migliori driver prima dell’arrivo di 802.11AC, anche se comunque il mio modello di scheda non è mai stato considerato uno dei migliori.

Ad un certo punto, però, ho cominciato a riscontrare continue disconnessioni, o in alcuni test con wget e altri computer della LAN, riscontravo un brusco calo della velocità di download fino al fermarsi dello stesso.
